Full-Time Computer Science Teacher & Technology Coordinator

Position Overview
We are seeking a full-time Computer Science Teacher & Technology Coordinator for the 2023-2024 school year. The teacher will develop and implement the Technology Education curriculum for the school.
Computer Science instruction begins at the third-grade level with one weekly 45-minute lesson and two 45-minute lessons for fourth graders through eighth grades each week. Additionally the teacher will lead two 45-minutes/week Computer Science elective classes for middle school students. Additional responsibilities include:
● Coach the school's FIRST LEGO League robotics program
● Update curriculum to match current technology trends
● Teach how to use Google Suite of software (Sheets, Slides, Docs)
As Technology Coordinator, a successful candidate will work closely with teachers to maintain the school’s overall technological upkeep and maintenance. Responsibilities include managing hardware and software issues for the teachers, continuing to monitor and upgrade BNS systems, and managing the wireless connections within the building. The Technology Coordinator will also make
recommendations concerning computer security within the school and may be consulted to assist with the website as needed.
Blacksburg New School provides a small classroom setting where the establishment of a positive learning environment and ample individual attention to students will be expected.
Minimum Qualifications
● Bachelor’s degree in Technology Education or a related field or equivalent experience
● Experience teaching children, ages 9-14
● Excellent classroom management skills
● Passion and enthusiasm for Computer Science education
● Experience working in Help Desk IT or similar IT area
● Experience working with Windows, MacOS, and ChromeOS
● Experience with general classroom technology (printers, projectors, etc)
● Familiarity with proper typing techniques
● Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite
Preferred Qualifications
● Master’s degree in Technology Education or similar field
● Familiarity with current technology trends both in and outside the classroom
● Experience using classroom coding programs (ie: Scratch, Code.org, Minecraft Edu), LEGO Robotics systems (EV3, Spike Prime/Essentials, WeDo 2.0), educational electronics (ie: Arduino, MakeyMakey), and 3D modeling softwares (TinkerCAD, Blender, Autodesk softwares)
● Experience with the Technology Student Association (TSA)
Hours and Compensation
Starting salary is $44,500/year plus competitive medical and dental benefits, and retirement package (after second year of employment). All full-time teachers are eligible for one dependent tuition waiver per year if desired grade level class size allows.

Part-Time Spanish I and/or II Teacher

Position Overview
We are seeking a Part-Time Spanish I and/or II Teacher for the 2023-2024 school year. The Spanish as a Foreign Language Program at BNS focuses on the development of communication skills, with an emphasis on language accuracy. The Middle School Spanish program begins in the 5th grade, and aims to include the study and mastery of the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) for Spanish as a Foreign Language I and II. The teacher will follow our spiraling curriculum to develop and implement lessons for our students by incorporating authentic material with classes conducted in Spanish. The teacher will also collaborate with our Spanish II teacher to provide instruction for our Spanish tutoring program.
Minimum Qualifications
● Demonstrated Spanish language fluency and competence
● Bachelor’s degree, state certification with an endorsement in Spanish preferred
● Previous Spanish teaching experience
● Excellent classroom management skills
● Passion and enthusiasm for Hispanic/Latine language and cultures
Hours and Compensation
Teaching Spanish I and II is a 24 hour/week position including 15 instructional hours, 6 hours for planning and prep, 1 hour for collaboration with the Elementary Spanish teacher and 2 hours of teacher meetings. On-campus classroom hours and schedule to be determined between the successful candidate and the school. Compensation is $23/hour, for one or both positions.

Part-Time Physical Education/Health Education Teacher
(Grades K-3 and/or 4-8)

We are seeking a Part-Time Physical Education (PE)/Health Education teacher for the 2023-2024 school year. The teacher will develop and implement the PE and Health Education curriculum for grades K- 3 and/or grades 4-8. This is a small classroom setting where the establishment of a positive learning environment and ample individual attention to students will be expected. Detailed information about the scope and sequence of the PE/Health Education curriculum is available on our website at www.blacksburgnewschool.org.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in related field or relevant experience
● Experience teaching children
● Excellent classroom management skills
● Passion and enthusiasm for PE/Health Education
Hours and Compensation
This is a 20-hour/week position, including 14 instructional hours and 4 hours for planning and prep as well as 2 hours of teacher meetings. Compensation is $23/hour.
